Starting to play polocrosse?

Firstly to start playing polocrosse you need the appropriate equipment....which the basics include:

  • Polocrosse Racquet
  • Polocrosse ball
  • Pony
  • Saddle (a stock saddle is useful but not essential)
  • bandages for all 4 legs
  • over reach boots for all 4 feet
  • bridle
  • hat
  • and a willing to have a go!

The best way to start learning is using the racquet on the ground so you can learn how to pick up, throw and catch properly to learn how to do this contact the club Secretary, Julie Parr to find out when there are practices / have a go days (Julie works with pony clubs also) click here for her details

once you have built enough confidence on the ground have a go with your pony, if your pony is not used to the stick and ball gently show him your new equipment on the ground until he is used to it, if your pony has a bad reaction to the stick and ball best to get a professional to help you and your pony .

you can also see if you can have a go on a schooled polocrosse pony, again contact Julie Parr for more info!

at club practices / pony club practices you can join in with others and start to play a few chukka's, and when you are ready and have learnt the rules and have enough team mates you can be entered into UKPA tournaments and Pony Club polocrosse games.

At the Arden Polocrosse Tournament in June 2009 a number of pony club members competed in Junior and E grades and had a wonderful time!

To read the rules you need to read the UKPA rule book here is the 2009 version

and a quick over view of the game - click here

Also Laura Scott, W.D Treasurer has compiled a check list for your first tournament! - click here
